The best key lime pie in the entire world

key lime pie

Oh em gee. You guys. This dessert. Amazing.

My brother always tries to convince me that key lime pie is not worth ordering when we go to restaurants. He thinks it’s a waste of a dessert. He says key lime pie is boring and that there are so many better desserts out there. He feels the same way about tiramisu. And sometimes, he might be right. Key lime pie is on plenty of restaurant dessert menus and his feeling is, once you’ve tasted one key lime pie, you’ve tasted them all. Now I happen to love key lime pie but I do see his point. Or at least I SAW his point. And then I tried the key lime pie at Fogarty’s in Key West and I quickly realized, not all key lime pies are created equal.

Cruising to The Bahamas

cruise 1

A little over a week ago I embarked upon my first cruise! Admittedly I was a little nervous about it. Would I feel trapped? Would seeing only ocean with no signs of land freak me out? Would I get sea sick? And, perhaps the most important question of all, would the food on the ship be good? I’m happy to report: no, no, no & YES!!! This could be dangerous. I think I could easily become one of those people that lives on cruise ships, that is, if my financial situation didn’t hinder me. I’m not kidding when I tell you we met someone that was going on his 1,000 something cruise.

Seriously though, what a great time. I spent eight blissful days aboard The Grandeur of the Seas, part of Royal Caribbean’s vision class of ships, as it cruised through Florida and The Bahamas. What a fun way to travel! I’m lucky I happen to enjoy flying, but for those of you who don’t, cruising could be your new best friend! People aren’t lying when they say cruise ships are basically like floating cities. The possibilities are endless. Continue reading

A salad I would order again

IMG_2610

If I’m being honest I generally hate ordering salads when I’m out to eat. It always seems like such a waste. There are usually so many other things on the menu I would rather be eating than a boring old salad. Don’t get me wrong, there are definitely moments when I crave salad and when made with fresh, good quality ingredients salads can be really yummy. But for the most part when I’m out to eat I always want to try other things on the menu. It’s pretty easy to skip over the salad section. Continue reading

My favorite meal of the summer

IMG_2672

This was hands down my favorite meal of the summer, perhaps my favorite meal in years. I cannot remember the last time my taste buds rejoiced the way they did with this meal. We were in Maui on vacation and had decided to hike to a waterfall that morning. We were in gym shorts and t-shirts and probably could have used a good shower after the hike and the swim in the waterfall but we were all really hungry and remembered passing a cool restaurant on the drive up to the waterfall. We decided we would stop on the way back for lunch and hope there wasn’t a dress code.

The place was called Mama’s Fish House and happened to be sitting on one of the most beautiful beaches I have ever seen. The view was absolutely breathtaking. I could have stayed there all day. The restaurant is open air and sits on it’s own private beach. Between the ocean breezes, the view and the soft Hawaiian music playing in the background, I felt like I was in heaven. Mama’s Fish House is also one of the fancier restaurants on Maui. We were underdressed to say the least. It’s the kind of place you wear your best to and you definitely don’t wear your workout clothes after schlepping up a mountain and swimming in questionable, murky (freezing) water. Nonetheless, they sat us and no one questioned our attire. Continue reading

My favorite restaurant at the Jersey shore

bandanas2

Believe it or not my favorite place to eat at the Jersey shore is not a seafood joint. Most people really look forward to the fresh seafood when eating at the beach but my favorite beach restaurant happens to be a casual little restaurant that serves up Mexican and Tex Mex food. Ever since we moved to New Jersey, my family has been taking summer vacations in Wildwood. I have eaten at numerous restaurants there, some fancy, some casual and dinner at Bandanas Mexican Grille is still the meal I look forward to the most. The festive atmosphere and the delicious food keep me coming back each summer. And, by the way, I’m not a dessert person but the dessert here is FANTASTIC.

Airplane views

airplane 1

I always enjoy traveling and vacations. Duh, who doesn’t? Recently I took a trip to Maui and had a great time snorkeling, lounging on the beach, eating some delicious food, and looking at some of the most gorgeous scenery and beach views imaginable. I also happened to really enjoy the flights. I know it’s a long flight (New York to Maui), but I’m used to traveling literally to the other side of the world, from New York to Bangkok, so a 10 hour flight really didn’t seem too bad. I have always liked flying. Maybe it’s because I grew up doing it and have spent probably an unhealthy amount of time in the air. Whatever the reason, I’ve always enjoyed it. Although, the flight to Thailand is even long for someone who enjoys flying. By the time we reach Tokyo (depending on the route the plane takes) even I am ready to jump out of my skin and never step foot in an airport or on an airplane ever again. But for the most part, as long as it’s 10 hours or less, I like flying. It’s very relaxing for me. I like watching the in-flight movies, listening to music, reading, and most of all, looking out the window of a plane. Continue reading

Furikake Fries!

IMG_2718

Isn’t that so fun to say? Furikake fries! I had actually never heard of Furikake (and I grew up in Asia, granted not Japan, but still, shame on me) until we went to Maui and ate at a restaurant called the Aloha Mixed Plate. It’s a really interesting restaurant and REALLY affordable, especially for Hawaii. Most restaurants in Hawaii, specifically Maui, are not really budget friendly so the Aloha Mixed Plate was a nice change of pace. The restaurant offers an amazing view too and is right on the beach. You can’t beat the view or the prices. The menu offers both Asian inspired items as well as traditional Hawaiian and classic American dishes. If you are ever in Maui, I highly recommend trying the Aloha Mixed Plate. It’s a really fun, casual, outdoor restaurant with great food, tropical drinks and friendly service. It’s also ALWAYS packed, which generally bodes well and is a good sign that the food is decent. Continue reading

My Maui Trip

IMG_1555

Matt and I recently returned from a week in Maui with Matt’s family. The week went by way too quickly, as all vacations tend to do, and now it’s back to our jobs/lives/errands in Jersey. Maui is absolutely beautiful. You MUST go. Add it to your bucket list. I have been to Oahu and Kauai as well, and Kauai is probably my favorite because of the untouched beaches and the natural feel of the island. However, Maui was a close second. We snorkeled, jumped off cliffs (eek!), read on the beach, hiked to a waterfall, and of course, ate some pretty amazing food. Here are some highlights and favorite moments from my trip:

Cayman the culinary island

It’s been awhile since I’ve posted but I’m sure you all have been busy with Thanksgiving and the Holiday season coming up! However, that’s not the only reason for my lack of posts. I’ve been in the Cayman Islands recently! I stumbled upon a groupon for the Sunshine Suites¬†on Grand Cayman in the Seven Mile Beach area and decided I could really use a vacation. I spent a week soaking up some sun and enjoying some much needed relaxation. Seven Mile Beach is world renowned for it’s beauty. The beach is made up of fine white sand, and water so crystal clear you can see straight to the bottom. I was expecting to enjoy the beauty of the island, but what I wasn’t expecting was the wide variety of amazing food that awaited me. Grand Cayman is truly and island fit for foodies. The uniqueness, freshness, and flavorful dishes made for a wonderful vacation. Here’s a sneak peak of my vacation in the Cayman Islands, at least the food aspect of it. Continue reading

Punta Cana Paradise

If your ideal vacation consists of staying in a five star resort, relaxing on a white sand beach sipping a fruity cocktail with the crystal clear turqoise water of the Caribbean lapping at your feet, then Punta Cana is your destination. Although there are many beautiful islands throughout the Caribbean, Punta Cana is THE place for all inclusive five star resorts. Not only are they a dime a dozen, but the prices are usually the best in the Caribbean. This was my second visit to Punta Cana, and you can be sure I will be back. Continue reading
