Asian turkey sloppy joes

turkey 1

Oh my gosh. You guys these turned out so good. I’m so excited to share the recipe with you. To be honest, I don’t cook with ground turkey all that often and I’m not sure why. It’s inexpensive, quick cooking, healthy and a blank canvas which means you can flavor it with almost anything. I was at Trader Joe’s the other day and the ground turkey was on sale so I bought a few packages even though I didn’t really have any specific dish to make in mind. I figured ground turkey was versatile enough I could find something in my pantry that would flavor it well. Continue reading

Eating light before turkey day with Asian flavored cod

cod 1

I started following weight watchers again about 2 weeks ago. I did it once before and lost about 20 pounds. Unfortunately, I’ve put all that weight back on in the last few years. I probably couldn’t have picked a worse time to start trying to lose weight. I mean Thanksgiving is two days away and there are often pre Thanksgiving events, like Friendsgiving, that are just as calorie heavy as turkey day itself. But there is always an excuse to NOT lose weight. In the summer there are barbecues and cookouts. In the winter, when it’s cold, it’s easy to load up on carbs and comfort foods like mac and cheese. Each season brings with it a number of holidays where food is involved. You have to learn how to navigate those holidays with moderation, balance, and eating well beforehand. This is one of the reasons why I love the Weight Watcher’s program so much. It’s not a “diet” in the traditional sense. It’s more of a lifestyle change. Continue reading

Furikake Fries!

IMG_2718

Isn’t that so fun to say? Furikake fries! I had actually never heard of Furikake (and I grew up in Asia, granted not Japan, but still, shame on me) until we went to Maui and ate at a restaurant called the Aloha Mixed Plate. It’s a really interesting restaurant and REALLY affordable, especially for Hawaii. Most restaurants in Hawaii, specifically Maui, are not really budget friendly so the Aloha Mixed Plate was a nice change of pace. The restaurant offers an amazing view too and is right on the beach. You can’t beat the view or the prices. The menu offers both Asian inspired items as well as traditional Hawaiian and classic American dishes. If you are ever in Maui, I highly recommend trying the Aloha Mixed Plate. It’s a really fun, casual, outdoor restaurant with great food, tropical drinks and friendly service. It’s also ALWAYS packed, which generally bodes well and is a good sign that the food is decent. Continue reading

Easy, flavorful marinade for beef stir fry

beef 2

I am constantly looking for easy meat dishes I can make. I could live off of carbs and veggies if I had to (I’m all about the side dishes) but Matt can’t so I’m always trying to find dishes that incorporate meat, which is why I’m so happy I’ve found this versatile marinade. It’s an adaptation of Ina Garten’s Indonesian grilled swordfish. I have no idea if this is authentically Indonesian, but I doubt it. Either way, this marinade is so simple and incredibly delicious. You could use it on any kind of meat you like. Ina uses it on swordfish. I’ve used it on chicken breasts before and then grilled them. The chicken came out so tender and full of flavor. This time I tried it on thinly sliced stir fry beef. It came out equally delicious. This is one you will want to keep on hand. I promise! Continue reading

Japanese Beef

It’s probably not technically Japanese, but this is a recipe my mom always used to make us as kids and for some reason, we called it Japanese beef. The meat does sort of taste like the beef you get when you go to a hibachi steakhouse, so I guess that’s how we came up with the name. Flavored with simple ingredients like garlic, ginger, and wine this dish is simple to make and yet full of flavor. The other great thing about this dish is that it only calls for a few ingredients and most likely, you won’t have to go shopping for anything because you will probably already have these things on hand. Continue reading
